Safety share - DIY projects
As the festive season approaches now is a common time to start tidying up the backyard and repairing or renovating sections of the house. While it is tempting to get the job done quickly, preparation is an important part of ensuring these projects are completed safely.
You can take steps to help ensure your DIY project is a safe one by:
- Doing a Take 5 on the task
- Asking yourself if it is something you can take on yourself – do you have the relevant skills and expertise?
- Ensuring you have the correct tools and protective equipment.
When taking on a project, important steps include:
- Allowing yourself enough time to avoid taking short cuts
- Reading instructions carefully to understand what the job involves and identify potential risks
- Employing a qualified tradesperson for tasks involving gas, or any major electrical or building works.
